Bought a spare portal box several years ago, but one of the ears
(that normally holds the pivot for the brake shoe) was busted off.
Got a couple of portal box cases from aguy who upgraded to
the aftermarket cases they make now, so decided it was time to tear
down my spare since that broken ear also holds my brake caliper bracket
(depending upon which side the box gets installed on)

Busted box

New case

Back cover and upper gear

Case with lower gear

Lower gear and axle shaft out
Can see huge output bearing......

Ouput shaft is hollow, threaded down the end for hub bolt.

I could not get the upper gear bearing race out of housing
and I figured that case was trashed anyway, so this is how
I got it out  Toothless

Drops right back in easy enough.

Now the fun part, getting this snap ring out thats holds in lower bearing

Had to buy more new tools, thank god for HF
and even then it was a biatch.......

Ready for re-assembly

OOOOOOOOH!!, geniune Mercedes parts.......

Custom tool for bearing install......

All painted, pretty and ready to go.......

Yes, but they are like 4 grand for a set.
I got the 406's instead.
